Voice to text, on your Mac and iPhone, on your terms.
A free dictation and voice-notes suite for Apple devices — a menu bar app for macOS and a companion iOS app. Transcribed on-device, with optional AI clean-up.
Quill is a privacy-first voice-to-text suite for Apple devices. On your Mac, hold a hotkey to dictate into any app. On your iPhone, hit record to build running voice notes. Either way, transcription happens locally — by state-of-the-art speech models on-device. No audio ever leaves your Mac or iPhone.
Optional AI clean-up can polish your raw dictation into clean prose, structured notes, a professional email, or code comments — using your own OpenAI or Anthropic API key. Available in both the Mac and iOS apps.
Quill is my take on what a dictation app should be: fast, local, keyboard-driven, and respectful of what you're saying. What started on the Mac now has a companion iPhone app for capturing voice notes on the go.
On the Mac, Quill lives in your menu bar. You press your hotkey, speak, release, and the transcript gets pasted directly into the app you're already using — Messages, Mail, a code editor, a terminal, wherever. On iPhone, Quill is a voice-notes app: hit record, speak, and each clip stitches into a running note. On both platforms, transcription runs entirely on-device using Apple's Core ML with Parakeet (multilingual, macOS) or Whisper (macOS + iOS). Your audio never touches a cloud server.
If you want more than a raw transcript, Quill — on either platform — can route the text through OpenAI or Anthropic in one of six modes: Clean, Email, Notes, Message, Code, or Off. On the Mac you can also tell Quill to pick the right mode automatically based on which app is in front. You bring your own API key; the app just plumbs the request.
Quill iOS is the mobile companion to the Mac app. It's not a port — it's a voice-note app built for the moments you can't reach a keyboard. Hit record, speak, release, and the transcript appends to whatever note you're building. Record a conference talk in sections and see the whole note grow. Same six AI modes as the desktop app (Clean, Email, Notes, Message, Code, Off). Same on-device transcription — your voice never touches a cloud server.
On both Mac and iPhone, transcription runs locally on-device using Core ML. If you enable AI clean-up, only the transcribed text is sent to OpenAI or Anthropic — using your own API key, stored in Keychain — and only after you've opted in.
Pick your platform. Both are free.
